Parabens are effective preservatives, but they are also chemicals with documented estrogenic activity. Research has shown that several commonly used parabens can interact with estrogen receptors, be absorbed through the skin and be detected throughout the human body. We do not believe a preservative has to be controversial to be effective. Water-based skincare absolutely needs proper preservation, so instead of leaving products under-protected, we use an alternative preservation system that better fits our ingredient standards and our plant-forward formulation philosophy.

What Are Parabens?

Parabens are a family of preservatives used to keep cosmetics, personal-care products, foods and pharmaceuticals from becoming contaminated with bacteria, yeast and mold.

Common parabens include:

They became popular because they are effective, inexpensive and easy to formulate with. But effectiveness is only one part of ingredient selection. At Natural Escapes, we also care about the larger research picture and whether an ingredient fits the standards we want for our products.


Do Parabens Mimic Estrogen?

Yes. Several commonly used parabens have demonstrated weak estrogenic activity. Research has shown that methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben can interact with estrogen receptors, with activity varying by the specific paraben.

Later reviews have continued to document estrogen-receptor activity and other endocrine-related effects. A 2018 review specifically summarized parabens as chemicals capable of influencing endocrine signaling, while a 2026 review again concluded that methylparaben and propylparaben show weak estrogenic activity and that repeated and cumulative exposure deserves further study. Paraben estrogenic activity is weaker than the body's natural estrogen, but the biological activity is documented. Combined with repeated everyday exposure, that is enough reason for us to choose an effective alternative.

Are Parabens Absorbed Into the Body?

Yes. Human exposure is well documented. Research has shown that parabens from topical products can penetrate the skin and be measured inside the body.

More recently, a controlled 2025 study asked adults to use a lotion containing known amounts of parabens. Paraben levels increased in urine during the lotion-use period, directly connecting personal-care product use with internal exposure. View the human lotion-exposure study on PubMed.

A massive 2025 global analysis measuring paraben levels in people reviewed data from 203 publications across 29 countries, including more than 370,000 urine measurements and nearly 20,000 blood measurements. Why Long-Term & Cumulative Exposure Matters

The question is not whether one tiny exposure instantly causes harm. The more useful question is what happens when people are exposed repeatedly through lotions, makeup, hair products, medications, foods and other everyday sources.

A review focused specifically on parabens and estrogen receptors pointed out an important research gap: most traditional safety evaluations look at individual parabens, while real-world exposure often involves multiple parabens from multiple products. Human reproductive research is also continuing to evolve. A 2024 review of female reproductive health found that the overall evidence is still developing, but reported significant findings in some human population and animal studies involving fertility, pregnancy, hormone signaling and reproductive development. In a prospective study of 884 couples, higher paraben exposure in female partners was associated with a lower chance of becoming pregnant. This type of observational study shows an association rather than proving cause, but it adds to the reasons researchers continue to examine repeated paraben exposure. Because parabens have raised legitimate concerns around estrogenic activity, repeated exposure and cumulative exposure, we prefer not to use them when effective alternatives are available.

For us, it is a simple formulation decision: when an ingredient raises meaningful health concerns and we can achieve excellent product safety and performance with an alternative that better fits our standards, we choose the alternative.


Why Natural Escapes Formulates Without Parabens

Our ingredient philosophy has always been about making purposeful choices, not simply following what is easiest or cheapest to formulate with.

We choose paraben-free preservation because:

That is enough reason for us to formulate differently.


Paraben-Free Does Not Mean Preservative-Free

A safe water-based lotion, shampoo, conditioner or body wash still needs proper preservation. Aloe juice, water and botanical ingredients create an environment where bacteria, yeast and mold can grow if the formula is not adequately protected.

We are not interested in making a product sound cleaner at the expense of microbiological safety. Our goal is to protect the finished product effectively while choosing a preservation system that better matches the rest of the formula.


What We Use Instead of Parabens

Many Natural Escapes water-based formulas use a preservative system based on benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid.

This combination is accepted for use under the COSMOS standard for natural and organic cosmetics. COSMOS specifically lists benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid among the preservatives permitted in COSMOS NATURAL and COSMOS ORGANIC formulations. Raw materials preserved with this combination also appear in the COSMOS database under certification bodies such as ECOCERT Greenlife.

That is a much better fit for the kind of products we want to make. It gives us the preservation we need without relying on parabens, while aligning with a recognized natural and organic cosmetic framework.

You may see this preservative system listed on our ingredient labels as benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid or as part of an eco-certified preservative blend, depending on the specific formula.
