Coconut Oil for Skin: Benefits, Risks & Best Uses for Dry Skin
Coconut oil is one of our favorite plant oils for dry skin because it is rich, deeply conditioning and clinically studied for its moisturizing benefits. Human research has found that virgin coconut oil can improve skin hydration and help replenish the natural lipids that keep dry skin feeling softer, smoother and more comfortable.
At Natural Escapes, we use coconut oil throughout our lotions and creams because it pairs beautifully with aloe, glycerin, ceramides and complementary plant oils to create a more complete moisturizing formula.
Where Coconut Oil Fits Best in Our Formulas
Because coconut oil appears in so many Natural Escapes moisturizers, the most useful way to shop this ingredient is by where you want to use it. For body, face and feet, we pair coconut oil with different complementary ingredients to match the needs of each area.

Quick Takeaways
- Coconut oil is a rich emollient with research supporting its use for dry skin.
- It is especially well suited to dry body skin, where its rich fatty acids help soften rough, moisture-depleted areas.
- For crepey-looking skin, coconut oil pairs beautifully with aloe, humectants and ceramides for deeper hydration and a smoother, softer feel.
- A good body lotion combines hydration and moisture. Aloe, glycerin and other water-based ingredients help hydrate the skin, while plant oils such as coconut oil help soften, condition and lock that moisture in.
Benefits of Coconut Oil for Skin
Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids, especially lauric acid. As an emollient, it helps soften the rough surface of dry skin and improve the way it feels.
One of the best human studies on coconut oil was a randomized, double-blind controlled trial in 34 people with dry skin. Virgin coconut oil improved skin hydration and surface lipid levels and performed comparably to mineral oil as a moisturizer. View the randomized coconut-oil trial on PubMed.
That is why coconut oil has remained one of our go-to moisturizing oils. It has real human research behind its benefits for dry skin and gives our lotions and creams the rich conditioning feel our customers love.
Coconut Oil for Dry & Crepey Skin
Crepey-looking body skin often appears more pronounced when it is dehydrated and low in surface lipids. Coconut oil contributes rich conditioning, while aloe and glycerin add water-based hydration and ceramides support the barrier.
For a complete routine, see our guide to natural ingredients for crepey skin.
Can Coconut Oil Clog Pores?
Coconut oil can feel too rich for some acne-prone or easily congested facial skin. If your face clogs easily, we would choose a finished facial moisturizer formulated for your skin type rather than applying a thick layer of pure coconut oil.
Body skin is different. Arms, legs, hands and other dry areas often tolerate richer oils very well.
Pure Coconut Oil vs. a Formulated Lotion
Dry skin usually needs more than oil. Oil softens, but it does not provide the same water-based hydration that aloe and humectants provide. A complete moisturizer can combine both.
This is why Natural Escapes lotions pair coconut oil with ingredients such as aloe vera juice, glycerin, olive or avocado oil and rice-derived ceramides. Each ingredient has a different job.
Natural Escapes Solutions
Coconut oil is one of the hardworking plant oils we use throughout our moisturizing formulas because it gives dry skin rich conditioning while working alongside aloe, glycerin, ceramides and complementary oils.

More Coconut-Oil Moisturizers
If you prefer another scent or texture, coconut oil is also part of several other Natural Escapes moisturizers:
That is the way we prefer to formulate with coconut oil: as one hardworking part of a layered moisturizing system rather than asking one oil to do everything.
Choose Coconut Oil in a Complete Moisturizer
For persistent dryness, we prefer coconut oil paired with water-based hydration, humectants and complementary plant oils rather than using oil alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, especially for dry body skin. Coconut oil is rich in emollient fatty acids that help soften rough skin and support the skin's moisture barrier. Human clinical research has also found that virgin coconut oil can improve skin hydration and surface lipid levels.
Yes. Coconut oil is especially useful for dry, rough or moisture-depleted skin because it helps soften the surface and replenish lipids. It works even better in a complete moisturizer that also includes water-based hydration from ingredients such as aloe and humectants such as glycerin.
Coconut oil can feel too rich for some acne-prone or easily congested facial skin. For the face, a finished moisturizer is often a better choice than applying pure coconut oil because the oil is balanced with other hydrating and conditioning ingredients.
It can be, particularly for very dry or mature-looking skin, but pure coconut oil may be too heavy for some facial skin types. We prefer coconut oil as part of a balanced facial formula. Our Olive & Omega Face Cream combines coconut oil with aloe, olive oil, avocado oil, vitamins and other conditioning ingredients for extra-dry, mature-looking skin.
Research on virgin coconut oil suggests it can help moisturize compromised dry skin and support the skin barrier. It should not be treated as a cure for eczema, but coconut oil can be a useful moisturizing ingredient in formulas designed for very dry or easily irritated skin. Many of our customers with eczema-prone skin choose our Lavender Body Lotion & Hand Cream, which combines coconut oil with aloe vera juice, olive and avocado oils, rice ceramides, vitamin B5 and vitamin E for rich daily moisture and barrier support.
Pure coconut oil mainly provides emollient moisture, while a well-formulated body lotion can provide both hydration and moisture. Natural Escapes lotions pair coconut oil with aloe vera juice, glycerin, plant oils, vitamins and barrier-supporting ingredients so dry skin gets more than oil alone.
