Overview

Behentrimonium methosulfate, often shortened to BTMS, is a conditioning ingredient used to give wet hair slip, reduce static and make hair easier to comb after washing.

Despite the word methosulfate in its name, BTMS is not a harsh sulfate cleanser such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). It is a positively charged conditioning ingredient with a completely different cosmetic function.

What the Science Says

  • Cosmetic Ingredient Review classifies behentrimonium methosulfate as an antistatic and hair-conditioning ingredient.
  • The CIR Expert Panel has concluded that behentrimonium methosulfate is safe in current cosmetic practices when products are formulated to be non-irritating.
  • Cationic conditioners are attracted to negatively charged areas on the hair surface, helping improve slip, combability and feel.

Key Compounds / Chemistry

  • Quaternary Ammonium Compound: Carries a positive charge that helps it associate with the hair surface.
  • Long Behenyl Chain: Provides conditioning and lubricity.
  • Methosulfate Counterion: Part of the ingredient's salt structure; it does not make BTMS a sulfate detergent.

Benefits

  • Improves wet and dry combability.
  • Helps reduce static and flyaway feel.
  • Adds slip for easier detangling.
  • Leaves hair feeling softer and smoother after rinsing.

Why Natural Escapes Body Uses It

We use BTMS in our conditioners because a good conditioner needs more than plant oils. Oils add emollience, while BTMS gives the formula the positively charged conditioning action that helps hair detangle, rinse smoothly and feel soft rather than coated or tangled.

FAQs

Is behentrimonium methosulfate a sulfate?

No. It is a cationic conditioning ingredient, not a sulfate detergent like SLS or SLES.

What does BTMS do for hair?

It helps provide slip, detangling, antistatic conditioning and easier comb-through.

Why can't plant oils do the same job?

Plant oils provide emollience, but BTMS has a positive charge that helps it interact with damaged and negatively charged areas of the hair surface, giving a different kind of conditioning performance.
